This free **Dark Empath Test** measures a rare and fascinating personality combination: having real empathy *alongside* darker traits like manipulation, self-importance, and a cool, strategic streak. In 16 quick questions, it scores you on two separate dimensions — your dark traits and your empathy — and shows which of four profiles you fit: the dark empath, the traditional “dark triad” type, the pure empath, or the typical balance most people have.

The “dark empath” is a genuine research concept, identified by psychologists Nadja Heym, Alexander Sumich, and colleagues in 2021. It describes people who score high on the Dark Triad (narcissism, Machiavellianism, and psychopathy) but — unlike the classic cold, callous “dark” type — also feel and understand others’ emotions. A quick, honest note before you start: this is a self-reflection tool, not a diagnosis, and a high score doesn’t make you a villain. These are ordinary traits on a spectrum, and self-awareness is exactly what makes them workable.

## What Is a Dark Empath?

A dark empath is someone who combines elevated dark personality traits with above-average empathy — a mix that, until recently, psychology assumed barely existed. The Dark Triad (narcissism, Machiavellianism, and psychopathy) has long been associated with *low* empathy; the stereotype of the manipulator is someone who simply doesn’t feel for others. The dark empath breaks that mold: they have the self-interested, manipulative, status-seeking tendencies of the dark traits, but they can also read emotions and even share them.

The concept comes from a 2021 study by Nadja Heym, Alexander Sumich, and colleagues at Nottingham Trent University, published in *Personality and Individual Differences*. Surveying around 1,000 people and using a statistical method called latent profile analysis, they found that people clustered into four distinct groups — and about one in five fell into the dark empath profile. Crucially, dark empaths scored higher than both the traditional dark triad group and typical people on *both* kinds of empathy: cognitive empathy (understanding what others feel and think) and affective empathy (actually feeling it with them). This combination is what makes them so interesting — and, in some ways, so hard to spot.

## The Four Personality Profiles

Heym and colleagues’ research identified four groups, based on where people fall on two dimensions: how high they are in dark traits, and how high they are in empathy. This test places you in the same four-way map. Here’s what each profile means.

- **Dark Empath (high dark traits + high empathy, ~20% of people):** You have darker, self-interested tendencies, but you also genuinely understand and feel others’ emotions.
- **Traditional Dark Triad (high dark traits + low empathy, ~13%):** The classic callous, manipulative profile — self-serving with little emotional connection to others.
- **Empath (low dark traits + high empathy, ~33%):** Warm, caring, and attuned to others, without the self-serving streak.
- **Typical (low-to-average on both, ~34%):** The most common profile — a moderate, everyday balance.

## Signs of a Dark Empath

Dark empaths share a recognizable set of signs that set them apart from both ordinary empaths and classic dark-triad types. You don’t need all of them, but the more that feel familiar — especially the combination of genuine emotional attunement *with* a self-serving edge — the more likely the pattern fits. Read these as the “signs you might be a dark empath.”

### You read people easily — and sometimes use it to your advantage

You have strong cognitive empathy: you can quickly sense what someone is feeling, what they want, and where they’re vulnerable. The dark-empath twist is that this skill can double as a tool — you sometimes use your read on people to influence, persuade, or get the upper hand, not just to connect.

### You genuinely feel others’ emotions, yet can still act in self-serving ways

Unlike the classic dark-triad type, you actually feel what others feel (affective empathy). But that feeling doesn’t always stop you from pursuing your own interests, seeking admiration, or coming out ahead. Living with both impulses at once is the core of the dark-empath experience.

### Your aggression tends to be indirect

Research found dark empaths are *less* overtly aggressive than traditional dark-triad types, but more prone to *indirect* aggression than most people — things like guilt-tripping, subtle social exclusion, backhanded or malicious humor, and quiet manipulation rather than open confrontation. Your empathy makes blunt cruelty unappealing, but it can sharpen the subtler kind.

### You’re socially skilled and often well-liked

Dark empaths tend to be more extroverted and agreeable than traditional dark-triad types, with real charm and social fluency. This is part of why the profile is hard to detect — the warmth is real, which makes the self-serving moments easy to miss or excuse, both for others and for yourself.

### You judge yourself harshly afterward

One of the most striking findings is that dark empaths judge themselves more harshly than traditional dark-triad types do. Because you actually feel for the people affected by your behavior, you’re more likely to experience guilt, self-criticism, or inner conflict about it — a sign that your conscience is very much online, even when your actions don’t always follow it.

### You want connection and admiration at the same time

You enjoy social interaction genuinely — but part of the draw can be a wish to be admired, to influence, or to come out on top. That blend of authentic warmth and a status-seeking undercurrent is distinctive to the dark-empath pattern.

## How This Dark Empath Test Works

This test measures two separate things about you, because being a dark empath depends on *both*: your level of dark traits, and your level of empathy. It contains 16 statements — eight tapping dark traits (self-interest, manipulation, status-seeking) and eight tapping empathy (understanding and feeling others’ emotions). For each, choose how much you agree, thinking about how you generally are:

**Strongly Disagree = 0 | Disagree = 1 | Neutral = 2 | Agree = 3 | Strongly Agree = 4**

Your answers produce two scores, each from 0 to 32: a **Dark Traits** score (from the first eight questions) and an **Empathy** score (from the last eight). A score of 16 or above counts as “high” on that dimension. Where your two scores land determines which of the four profiles fits you — and being a dark empath specifically means scoring high on *both*. Both scores are worked out for you and shown with your result. Answer honestly; your results are private, and there are no right answers.

*For reference, here are all 16 statements, grouped by the dimension each one measures.*

**Dark Traits (questions 1–8):**

1. I’ll use charm, flattery, or pressure to get what I want from people.
2. I often feel I deserve special treatment or recognition.
3. I can be calculating, and I think ahead about how to come out on top.
4. I don’t feel much guilt when I put my own interests first.
5. I like being admired and seen as impressive.
6. I’m willing to bend the truth or manipulate a situation to my advantage.
7. I can be cold or ruthless when it serves my goals.
8. I enjoy having influence or power over how things (and people) go.

**Empathy (questions 9–16):**

1. I can usually tell what someone is feeling, even when they hide it.
2. I genuinely feel moved when someone close to me is hurting.
3. I’m good at understanding other people’s points of view.
4. Other people’s emotions affect me and stay with me.
5. I can sense the mood in a room almost immediately.
6. When someone cries or suffers, I feel it too.
7. I’m often the person others come to because I “get” them.
8. I care about how my actions make other people feel.

## Understanding Your Results

Your result depends on where your two scores land. Each dimension is scored from 0 to 32, and 16 or above counts as “high.” Find your combination in the grid, then read your profile below. Remember: this is a map for self-understanding, not a verdict, and no profile makes you a good or bad person.

| Dark Traits | Empathy | Your Profile |
| --- | --- | --- |
| High (16–32) | High (16–32) | Dark Empath |
| High (16–32) | Low (0–15) | Traditional Dark Triad |
| Low (0–15) | High (16–32) | Empath |
| Low (0–15) | Low (0–15) | Typical |

## Are Dark Empaths Dangerous?

The dark empath has developed a reputation online as “the most dangerous personality type” — but that framing oversells what the research actually found, and the researchers themselves have pushed back on it. The logic behind the scary label is real enough: someone who has dark, self-serving traits *and* the empathic skill to read people precisely could, in theory, manipulate more effectively and hide their intentions better than a blunt, low-empathy manipulator. Their charm and warmth are genuine, which makes the self-serving moments easier to miss.

But the data complicate the horror story. Dark empaths were actually found to be *less* aggressive than traditional dark-triad types — their empathy appears to restrain the worst behavior, not supercharge it. They’re more prone to subtle, indirect aggression than the average person, but they’re also more likely to feel bad about it and judge themselves for it. In other words, the empathy cuts both ways: it can be a tool for manipulation, but it’s also a brake and a conscience.

Notably, the research did *not* find dark empaths to be more depressed, anxious, or stressed than others — just slightly higher in neuroticism and harder on themselves. The honest takeaway: “dark empath” describes a real and complex mix, not a supervillain, and the empathy in the equation is as much a reason for hope as for caution.

## Frequently Asked Questions

### What is a dark empath?

A dark empath is a person who has elevated dark personality traits — narcissism, Machiavellianism, and psychopathy, collectively called the Dark Triad — but who also has above-average empathy, both the ability to understand others’ emotions (cognitive empathy) and to feel them (affective empathy). This combination was identified in a 2021 study by Nadja Heym, Alexander Sumich, and colleagues, and it overturned the old assumption that dark traits always come with low empathy. About one in five people fit the profile. The defining feature is the coexistence of a self-serving, manipulative streak with genuine emotional attunement to others.

### What’s the difference between a dark empath and the dark triad?

The difference is empathy. Both have elevated dark traits, but the traditional dark-triad type has low empathy — they’re callous and emotionally disconnected from others — while the dark empath feels and understands others’ emotions. In the research, dark empaths were actually less aggressive than traditional dark-triad types, more extroverted and agreeable, and more likely to judge themselves harshly afterward. You can think of the dark empath as a dark-triad personality with a conscience and emotional radar switched on — which changes how the traits express themselves, often toward subtler, indirect behavior rather than open callousness.

### Are dark empaths dangerous or manipulative?

They can be manipulative, but the “most dangerous personality type” reputation overstates the evidence. The real finding is more nuanced: dark empaths are more prone than average to *indirect* aggression — guilt-tripping, social exclusion, subtle manipulation — but they’re *less* aggressive overall than traditional dark-triad types, because their empathy restrains them. Their empathy is genuinely double-edged: it can make manipulation more skillful, but it also acts as a brake and a source of guilt. Most dark empaths are not predators; they’re complex people managing competing impulses, and self-awareness makes a real difference in which way those impulses go.

### Can a dark empath change?

Yes, and the empathy that defines the profile is exactly what makes change possible. Because dark empaths genuinely feel for others and tend to be self-critical about their behavior, they have the two ingredients real change requires: a conscience that registers the impact of their actions, and the motivation to do something about it. The growth path usually involves channeling the social insight toward connection and leadership rather than control, noticing the pull toward indirect aggression before acting on it, and working on the underlying need for admiration or status. Therapy can help with all of this. Unlike the low-empathy dark-triad profile, the dark empath already has the emotional equipment that change depends on.
